In this special edition of our blog, we sit down with Laura, the visionary behind Schwan Hair, to delve into the story behind the brand, its mission, and the journey of building a successful raw hair extensions business. Let's start at the beginning. What inspired you to start Schwan Hair?

I grew up watching my mother build successful businesses from the ground up, and I knew that one day I'd follow in her footsteps. I studied Biomedical Sciences and became a Solution Design Engineer, so 'hair' wasn't really something I envisioned for myself. However, I guess my inspiration stemmed from spending a lot of time in my mum's beauty and hair salons. It probably started around 2015 when I was going through a "blonde phase," and my hair suffered a lot of damage. I also experienced hair loss and eventually did a big chop. I was looking for extensions to make me feel more comfortable, but it was now more difficult than ever to find hair that not only matched my texture but also the colour. I realised how poor the quality was in mainstream UK hair businesses, and after a few horrible hair purchases, I took matters into my own hands. I made it my mission to find the highest quality, unprocessed, authentic donor hair that matched my hair texture and enhanced its natural beauty. It didn't take long for people to start noticing my hair, and I began receiving compliments everywhere. I started sourcing hair for friends and family, and in 2020, Schwan Hair was born.

It's evident that integrity is a cornerstone of your business philosophy. Could you share some insights into the process of sourcing raw hair extensions and maintaining ethical standards?

Sourcing raw hair ethically is paramount to our business model. For example, during the 5-year span I researched and vetted our trusted hair sources, I met amazing people whom I've built strong relationships with. Our sourcing process involves thorough vetting and certification to ensure that the hair is sanitary and obtained responsibly with full consent. We source only from sources who are licensed and qualified and don't mind paying the extra pound to ensure our standards are met. 

That's commendable. How do you envision the future of Schwan Hair, and what are your goals moving forward?

We're approaching our fifth year soon and I'm grateful to still be in business, having powered through pandemics and recessions. However, looking ahead, our goal is to continue expanding our products and enhancing the customer experience. My priority has always been to continue offering the truly authentic and highest quality hair our customers are accustomed to. Their satisfaction is everything to me! Witnessing how my brand restores confidence and brings happiness to women worldwide is priceless. I cherish every comment, email, DM, and review - they truly mean the world and keep us going. We're dedicated to innovation and constantly exploring new avenues to improve the quality and versatility of our raw hair extensions. We switch out products and improve textures to ensure we get it right. Moreover, we're aiming to get more socially involved in order to make a positive impact in our community.

Thank you for sharing your insights with us, Laura. Before we wrap up, I'd love to ask a personal question, if you don't mind. What has been the most rewarding moment for you on this journey with Schwan Hair?

Sure! Honestly, there have been so many experiences. I've met amazing people, formed great friendships, and learned a lot along the way. Life is all about making the best of it, and I'm taking it all in. It's not always easy, but 99% of the time, I'm enjoying the journey and looking forward to the future. Hair is such a delicate topic and truly a confidence booster. I remember one customer in particular who came across our Instagram looking for medical wigs. Although I didn't offer them at the time, I decided to have one made for her. Later, she expressed how our raw hair extensions had not only restored her confidence but also helped her feel beautiful without looking "wiggy". It's truly empowering and made such a difference despite facing her challenges. Knowing that we played a part in making a positive impact on someone's self-esteem and well-being was incredibly fulfilling and reinforced the importance of what we do at Schwan Hair.
